Summary of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now

Deepak Shukla’s Notes On Summary of Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now by The Top Tier Summaries narrated by Erik Vestal

Hey guys,

I finished reading this book on the 10th of January 2021.

Here’s a synopsis of the book I grabbed from Amazon:

“It’s no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light.”

And here are my actual notes I took whilst I was listening to this on Audible:

  • Pain approaches you when you are not present in the now
  • Nobody chooses pain or suffering
  • Enlightenment tells you to focus on the here and now
  • Surrender is the freedom from negativity. It is just accepting what is
  • Accept the situation as it is
  • Illness is not your present – it is your life situation – now is free of problems – therefore illness can not be a part of it
  • Non-resistance indicates the doing has stopped
  • Surrender is good option to end an argument
  • Nothing in this life is negative. Something bad might turn into your mentor or the biggest opportunity
  • Beyond happiness and unhappiness, there is peace
  • Pay attention to your partner and accept her if you want to enlighten your relationship
  • Pay attention to your partner and accept her if you want to enlighten your relationship
  • Watch your reaction instead of being the reaction
  • The egoic mind seeks arguments
  • Observe your breathing 2x per day
  • Silence and space are critical to reach the unmanifested
  • To reach the unconscious mind you must focus on space
  • Space is massively important it’s what holds everything
  • Silence has a higher worth than sounds
  • Silence is a very powerful tool to reach the unmanifested state – pay attention to the silence
  • Psychic wellbeing as important as physical well being
  • Be as present as you can
  • The past is a bottomless pit so concentrate on the now to get your freedom
  • Your inner purpose is connected to your being. And your being is always with you now. As you get older you will appreciate the now
  • You can plan for the future but it is not an acceptable reason to not enjoy the here and now
  • By waiting for something you create an inner war between your here and now
  • If your future is absorbing all of your present try to absorb the now. The future SHOULD NOT take away today’s charm

  • Let your past die. Live in the present
  • If you try to alter a situation try to remove the negativity first
  • Observe your life – wherever you are – be there totally!
  • If you feel something is bad – do not complain about it – just simply try to bring a change
  • Drop the things that cause unhappiness
  • You are waiting for whatever is going to happen now
  • Zen leaders define peace as a state of serenity
  • If you are thinking you are not in your present
  • Inner purpose to be present NOW
  • Outer purpose to set goals for the future
  • If you face a problem you should be fully in it now instead of reacting
  • Be fully present
  • Observe your mind. If you react to past or present – unconsciousness is present
  • A lot of people live in their unconscious – thinking of other places and being in other states – this is wrong
  • Try to get rid of psychological time and live only in clock time
  • Past and future aren’t real. All you have is now
  • Seeking yourself in your mind is a mistake – all that exists is now
  • Pain is an illusion created by fear
  • Englightenment is only observed when you rise above thoughts and stop them from controlling you – focus upon now
  • The greatest obstacle to Enlightenment is when you are not able to find your worth
  • There is nothing apart from now – so you should focus on it
  • Nothing exists beyond now
  • Pain is an illusion created by your mind about past or future – there is no pain in the present
  • The unconscious mind – the egoic structure – plays with your mind and thinks and thinking causes pain
  • The unmanifested – the being
